German-Mongolian Institute Students Gain Insight into AMEP’s Impact on Sustainable Development

In an enriching exchange of knowledge and ideas, 17 students from the German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology (GMIT) visited the Australia-Mongolia Extractives Project (AMEP) on December 13, 2023. The students, all pursuing degrees in industrial engineering with a focus on project management, were eager to learn about AMEP and the life cycles of international donor development programs.

Led by Dr. Enkhzaya, their professor, the students engaged in a detailed session facilitated by Rena Guenduez, the Team Lead at AMEP. Rena provided valuable insights into the life cycle of donor-funded programs and delved into the significance of initiatives like AMEP in making a positive impact on communities.

Rena shared her extensive career experiences in sustainability and community development, emphasizing the crucial role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors in shaping responsible and impactful projects. The students were given a unique opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge from their coursework to real-world applications in the extractives sector.

The interactive session allowed the students to pose questions, gaining deeper insights into different facets of the extractives industry. Discussions covered not only the technical aspects but also the broader implications of responsible resource management, sustainability practices, and community engagement within the sector.

Looking ahead, AMEP is set to mark a significant milestone in 2024 with the ceremonial handover of key documents, resources, and tools for the student body at GMIT. This handover will symbolize the transition of responsibilities and knowledge transfer, ensuring the continuity of AMEP's impactful work in the region.

The visit served as a valuable platform for academic exchange, providing students with a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation. By fostering such collaborations, initiatives like AMEP contribute not only to academic enrichment but also to the development of a new generation of professionals equipped with the skills and insights necessary for sustainable development in the global arena.
